19/9/21: boat trip on Lake Victoria

In this blog post I described the walk from Muyenga, the suburb of Kampala in which I’m living, to the shores of Lake Victoria along a train line. Once you’re there you can take a boat ride on to the Lake and explore some of the nearby islands. So last Sunday that is what IContinue reading “19/9/21: boat trip on Lake Victoria”

13/8/21: so sorry we couldn’t save you, Rex

In my very first blog post on this platform I mentioned Pass and Rex, the compound dogs where I live. Their job is as guard dogs, so they are kept in their kennel for a good bit of the day so that they are only dozing at night, ready to start barking at huge volumeContinue reading “13/8/21: so sorry we couldn’t save you, Rex”

9/6/21: guest blog by Justin from Goma, DRC

It gives me great pleasure to introduce this blog post by Justin Dunia from Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo which shares a border with Uganda. I met Justin through our mutual friend Ludger who is a fellow supporter of the Kampala Christian Orphanage. It was an extraordinary privilege to be in touch with Justin duringContinue reading “9/6/21: guest blog by Justin from Goma, DRC”

6/6/21: thank you, Ranelagh School!

When I returned to school in September 2019 after I visited Kampala Christian Orphanage, I found myself on the 6th form assembly rota when the theme was, “Give us today our daily bread.” So I based the assembly around my visit, and served up my version of posho and beans, the staple meal here, theContinue reading “6/6/21: thank you, Ranelagh School!”

15/5/21: I had intended to learn some Luganda….

My attempts to learn languages over the years have met with varying success. The best was learning Indonesian when I was on short term missionary service when I was 18. Not long before I had been attending classes at school headed ‘French’, there is part of me which feels I owe the British tax payerContinue reading “15/5/21: I had intended to learn some Luganda….”

9/5/21: the walk to Lake Victoria

One of the many pleasures of living here is being within walking distance of Lake Victoria, according to Wikipedia the third largest in the world after the Caspian Sea and Lake Superior. As can be seen in the map below the shores are in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya with Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic RepublicContinue reading “9/5/21: the walk to Lake Victoria”

1/5/21: it’s been raining!

Kampala literally means, “Hill of the impala” and was originally built on 7 hills, increased urbanisation means this is now 28 – depending on exactly where you draw the city lines. When actually in Kampala these hills are very obvious, more so than in the photograph above, taken from the roof of the school whenContinue reading “1/5/21: it’s been raining!”

25/4/21: I’ve joined the church choir!

Very pleased to have been worshipping at St Stephen’s Church of Uganda Church, Kisugu, since I came out of lockdown in November. St Stephen’s is walking distance from where I am living, has services in English and Luganda, follows much the same liturgy that I’m used to, with a strong focus on Biblical teaching. Fantastic!Continue reading “25/4/21: I’ve joined the church choir!”

11/4/21: getting round Kampala on the back of a boda

It was about 2 months after arriving in Dar es Salaam back in 2012 that I went to a meeting in Arusha. As we were travelling in the city, I remarked upon a group of motorcycles on the side of the road, and it was explained to me that these were ‘boda boda’ (or justContinue reading “11/4/21: getting round Kampala on the back of a boda”
