Here in the UK the General Election campaign has been in full swing for some weeks now, with the election itself due this coming Thursday. During this time I’ve been watching the news, particularly asking myself, what distinctive contribution might Christians bring to the process? I’m aware that the below is a bit of aContinue reading “01/07/24: content or process? A Christian approach to politics”

17/03/24: teacher guide (2) do unto others
I hope you don’t mind, a bit of a bit of a change of tone in this part of the guide, can’t see a way of satirising the point I want to make and it’s one very close to my heart. As always, interested to know what you think. At school we require students toContinue reading “17/03/24: teacher guide (2) do unto others”
18/02/24: learning from Balaam
No getting around it, large parts of the Old Testament make for difficult reading for the modern Christian. Reading through the Bible in a year (this year reading 3 or 4 chapters a day going continuously from Genesis to Revelation) I’m currently at the end of Numbers / beginning of Deuteronomy. Situation: Moses is inContinue reading “18/02/24: learning from Balaam”
01/08/22: welcome to all my new Facebook friends!
Since my last Facebook post I’ve arrived back in the UK, sorry to leave Uganda but also pleased to be back. Really helpful to have a bit of a gap before starting to work again, corresponding to only a 2 week gap 2 years ago when going to Uganda. But the thing uppermost in myContinue reading “01/08/22: welcome to all my new Facebook friends!”
25/06/22: return to the UK, the countdown is on!
My two year stint in Uganda is coming to an end. So wonderful to be here! Students and colleagues have been fantastic, really appreciated the opportunity to get to know some wonderful people running homes for vulnerable children, I’ve met Stanley the artist, engaged with a lovely church, all in the Pearl of Africa, aContinue reading “25/06/22: return to the UK, the countdown is on!”
24/04/22: book review, “15 ways to a more effective prayer life” by Selwyn Hughes
You may have seen my Facebook post from Speke Resort Hotel, on the shores of Lake Victoria heading towards Entebbe. Not something I’d do very often or for very long but it was very nice, if you missed it, please see below the view from my private balcony: A bit of time off, combined withContinue reading “24/04/22: book review, “15 ways to a more effective prayer life” by Selwyn Hughes”
28/11/21: please check out my YouTube channel!
Over the last two days I’ve updated each of the sections on my YouTube channel “A minute a day to pray” and thought it was a good time to encourage more views! I started the channel in January of this year, aiming to put a one minute video up each day with a Bible readingContinue reading “28/11/21: please check out my YouTube channel!”
20/11/21: Hallelujah!
I’ve long been a fan of Leonard Cohen’s extraordinary song, “Hallelujah!” It’s particularly, I think, the tension between the word ‘Hallelujah’ and the mournful, haunting tune. And Cohen’s voice itself is astonishing low, I’ve tried to sing at his register and it literally hurts to do so. As one combined package it really is amazing.Continue reading “20/11/21: Hallelujah!”
7/11/21: in honour of ‘Psalm Praise’
‘Psalm Praise’ was published in 1973, much at the same time as I started as a child chorister at the church where my father was a young vicar (senior pastor). The front cover is remarkably unassuming: As its name suggests, it is mostly settings of Psalms, including a small number of Anglican chants, most ofContinue reading “7/11/21: in honour of ‘Psalm Praise’”
10/10/21: book review, “Tails I lose” by Justyn Rees Larcombe
At my previous school in the UK I was teaching a ‘Preparation for Adult Life’ class on one occasion using a lesson plan provided centrally. In the lesson we showed this video in which a former gambler describes his journey, starting with very small bets made very infrequently, escalating to three years later by whichContinue reading “10/10/21: book review, “Tails I lose” by Justyn Rees Larcombe”
